I joined my first network marketing company about 18 years ago. Actually, my lovely wife Angel joined and I watched!

Unlike me, she's a natural sales person. She built a nice retail business selling the products. I supported her by putting together nice product displays and by helping with the records and the books. She did all the selling.

What was most enlightening was going to the training events with her and listening to the top distributors. I listened to them very closely and heard them all say the same thing:

"The key to wealth is LEVERAGE."

We were working hard, we built a very large customer base, but we weren't making much money. That was because we were doing lots of labor, but it was us (really my wife) doing all the work without applying any leverage.

  • She set all the appointments.
  • She made all the phone calls.
  • She did all the presentations.
  • She did all the follow-up.
  • She did all the training.
  • She met with everyone in person.

Her customers loved her. But there was NO WAY she could ever get ahead financially with that old-fashioned, worn-out, stone-age business model.

And even more telling - that wasn't the way her successful upline leaders were doing their business!

By the time this realization dawned on us, we had decided to make a move from Orlando Florida, where we met, to Orange County, California.

Angel did such a good job building a large customer base that she decided to sell her customers to another distributor (all of her customers were in the Orlando area and she felt she couldn't support them well from California - again another sign of the "stone-age" business model we were using).

But now I had the bug!

I had been looking at several career options, and investigated many home-based businesses. It was clear that MLM was the only business that could give me the 3 things I needed in a business:

  1. A rock-bottom investment (I didn't have any money).
  2. The chance to make Millions of dollars (I wanted to get RICH).
  3. The ability to earn a passive residual income (I wanted TIME FREEDOM).

Now there were only 2 questions left:

  1. Which company to join.
  2. Where to find a mentor who had already achieved what I wanted to achieve.

The answer soon came in the mail ...

I received a little direct-mail booklet that featured a top distributor. I contacted him, and the rest is history ...

... A HISTORY OF FAILURE, THAT IS!

He was so wildly successful (the #1 distributor in the company) that I thought for sure I would be as successful as he was if I simply did exactly what he did.

After all, that's how you win at MLM right? You follow the "duplicatable" system from your upline. So I did exactly what he taught me:

  • I made a list of my 1,000 (or so) closest friends and contacted them all.
  • I talked to strangers who came within "3 feet" of me.
  • I constantly asked for referrals.
  • I went to local business organizations, health clubs, doctors offices.
  • I put flyers at local businesses.

... and I struggled, strained, got rejection, felt embarrassed, experienced frustration, and hated every minute of it.

Still, I kept going.

Why?

Because even though I hated the process of what I was doing, I wanted the goal - the passive residual income. And I wanted it so bad that I was willing to put up with the pain and frustration day after day.

Unfortunately, "day after day" turned into "year after year." And that made for a miserable life.

Then one day SALVATION ARRIVED IN THE MAIL!

I received the first network marketing magazine I had ever seen. And WOW was it a revelation! I learned that there were more network marketing companies than I had ever imagined. And there were people building these companies in many creative ways that never occurred to me:

  • Direct mail.
  • Phone calls.
  • Internet (at that time it was just message boards, no HTML even!).
  • Print ads.
  • Radio programs.
  • TV ads.

Now it seems obvious, but back then it never occurred to me that I could do any of this. I thought I just had to duplicate exactly what my upline did.

It was a new day in my MLM career. It was like Spring had arrived, the birds were singing, the flowers blooming and there were brand new fluffy baby rabbits hopping around! Ok, that's a bit dramatic, but that's how I felt!

I proceeded to call EVERY AD IN THE MAGAZINE!

Soon thereafter the phone started ringing and my mail box started filling up with all types of exciting offers. The opportunities seemed endless. And there were so many new companies starting up every month. I thought it would be a great advantage to join one of the new companies and get in on the "ground floor" and take advantage of the huge momentum during a company's first few years.

In the next few years I JOINED OVER 30 MLM COMPANIES!  

I'm definitely not bragging about that. I share that with humility to let you know that I made every mistake in the book. Most of those companies went out of business in a year or two.

I thought the new companies could go nowhere but up, but I quickly learned that those "ground-floor" opportunities had very deep, dark and stinky basements! Fortunately I finally found a good, solid, ethical company. I've been with them for 9 years now and they treat their people right - like family.

During that time I learned how to build a downline, do it fast, and do it so it would last.

After I found success, I looked back on my history and asked what kept me from succeeding sooner, hoping to find an answer that would help others as well.

My sponsor was a great guy actually. And he was very, very skilled at talking to people one-on-one, he had a huge warm market, and he loved talking to strangers. That was his personality and so he was using the right marketing methods for him. And it was natural for him to teach me to do what worked for him. Which was fine. But he never took into consideration that my personality was different than his.

  • I didn't feel comfortable walking up to strangers and talking to them about my products or business.
  • I didn't feel comfortable mixing friendships and family with business.
  • I didn't feel comfortable with one-on-one selling.

Everyone's answer to this was that I had to "get out of my comfort zone."

That's a nice (and old worn-out) cliche, but what they didn't understand was that I wasn't "comfortable" with those things because they didn't align with my personality type.

Rather than offering to find a marketing method the better fit my personality, the standard answer in the industry is to change your personality to fit their marketing method!

This is dumb.

And it is the direct reason that MLM has received a bad reputation among so many people.

This "cookie-cutter" approach is a VIOLATION OF HUMAN NATURE. It says "Our method is more important than your nature."

It puts a principle before people. Always the wrong thing to do. So many people have been hurt in the name of "principles." Don't get me wrong. I believe in principles. But principles are there to protect and help people. Not the other way around.

As Jesus said:

"The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath."

Human nature is independent! It actively resists being put into a box to conform. The human spirit, by it's very nature, strives to express it's individuality.

But most network marketing, even the biggest names and some of the biggest earners, have ignored that basic fact and insisted that everyone in MLM use marketing methods designed for aggressive, extrovert, sales-oriented "go-getter" personality types.

How did this come about?

I suspect it's because people with that personality type were the ones who had the most success with network marketing in the beginning. The are the "natural sellers," so it makes sense that they would be the first ones to experience success. They shared what they did (which was natural and comfortable for their personality type) with others. It became written in stone that this is the way you do it, because this is the way the top leaders did it.

Unfortunately this was an astronomical mistake in the early history of network marketing. Since very few people have that aggressive personality type, the masses were not able to duplicate the leaders' success. And so the industry started getting a bad reputation as people said it "doesn't work."

MLM, at it's root, is simply a method of paying people based on multiple levels of compensation. So to say IT "doesn't work" is not true. The payout of multiple levels works. What hasn't worked is the training and the narrow-minded marketing approach.

So here's one of the truest things you'll ever hear about how to succeed in network marketing:

Success does NOT come from:

  • Creating goals that are worthy or exciting.
  • The hope of one day making a big check.
  • Making a "dream board."
  • Attending all of the events.
  • Doing what your sponsor does.

Success (in any area of life) comes from doing consistent daily action. It's the small baby steps made day after day after day after day ... that add up to the big results.

Here's the problem: Most people in network marketing don't do the simple daily actions CONSISTENTLY.

We're asking people to come home after already putting in a full day at work ... and then go back to work again!

And on top of that, we're asking them to do things that most people aren't comfortable doing - talking to strangers, mixing family and business, and selling.

Now, why would they resist this double whammy?

The common response in our industry has been, "They're not treating their business like a business and that's their own fault."

But here's a more elegant response: "Perhaps they aren't doing the consistent daily actions because they don't ENJOY them. They aren't FUN!"

It comes back to the natural human response again:

It's human nature to move toward pleasure
... and move away from pain.

People don't have to be motivated to do what is fun.

So the answer is obvious ...

MAKE THE BUSINESS FUN!

If people ENJOY doing their business, they will do it. If they don't enjoy it, then they won't. It's that simple. So by helping people find a marketing method they will LOVE to do, they will enjoy the process, and not just be looking for the end result.

So how do we make the business fun?

Not with jokes and gimmicks. It must be a deeper, more meaningful enjoyment than that.

We make the business fun by making the daily PROCESS fun, so they will do the daily action which makes up the small building blocks of a longer-term successful business.

And we make the daily process fun, by providing them with a marketing method that fits their personality and excites them personally.

Imagine a downline of people who go to their regular jobs every day, but while there, they're can't think of anything except: "I can't wait to get home to work on my own business." Now that's genuine motivation. The kind that works!

Here's what I learned, and THIS CAN REVOLUTIONIZE YOUR BUSINESS OVERNIGHT:

  • The idea that success comes from everyone following a "duplicatable" system is total BULL-COOKIE! Just because your upline is doing something, does NOT mean you should do it!  Clue: "duplicatable" isn't even a real word - try looking it up in the dictionary!
  • The truth is that to succeed, you need a system that is custom-fit for you and your personality!
  • You need access to a "Portfolio" of marketing systems, so when you sponsor other people, they can find the one that fits their personality too.
  • MLM is a "team sport." You need more help than you're getting. Your upline should be providing you with all the tools, training and personal guidance you need.
  • You need leverage up the wazoo! You need leverage in your company, your products, your compensation plan and especially in your marketing methods. That means more income for less effort. 


In fact, "Multi-Level Marketing" is a pretty bad acronym for "MLM." The multiple levels of payout is really not as distinctive to network marketing as one might think. All organizations have multiple levels with the people at the top making the most and the people at the bottom making the least. That isn't unique at all.

So I've created a new acronym for MLM which is:

"MULTI-LEVERAGED MARKETING"

That is much more distinctive to our industry (when done right) and is much more important.

Remember the first lesson I learned about how to succeed in MLM? It was to use leverage - as much as you can get!

All wealth is created by leverage, and without it you will never get ahead. NEVER.

  • In real estate you leverage an expensive property with a small down payment.
  • In investing you leverage a large position with margin.
  • In traditional business you leverage a huge asset with other people's money (a loan) and other people's time (employees).

Leverage is controlling a large interest with a small amount of effort.

The problem with leverage in most endeavors is that it inherently comes with a lot of risk.

  • If you lose your real estate (disaster not covered by insurance, or collapsing housing market), you have to pay the bank the money on the entire value of the building, not just your down payment.
  • If your stock gaps down 90% or the company goes bankrupt, you not only lose the money you invested, but you have to pay back the entire value of that plus all the margin you "borrowed."
  • If your business goes bankrupt (as most of them do in the first 5 years), you must pay back the entire loan ... even though you now have less money to pay it back with!

This is where network marketing is uniquely wonderful. It gives you the best of both worlds -

  • You get the leverage of other people's time and money.
  • You have very, very little risk because there aren't any large up-front investments (if you choose your company wisely).
  • Oh, and you also get TIME FREEDOM, which nothing else gives you.

It really is THE SINGLE BEST BUSINESS MODEL IN THE WORLD!

But there's more to what I mean by "Multi-Leveraged Marketing."

When I say "Multi-Leveraged," I mean we want to leverage in as many "multiple" ways as possible!

  2. It must pay out really big money on the back end. There must be the ability for you to eventually make millions of dollars and become independently wealthy so you never have to worry about money again.
  3. There must be very strong financial incentives EVERY STEP ALONG THE WAY from the time you start your business, all the way to when you become independently wealthy.

Never forget - there are many great ways to make money. We choose network marketing because it allows us to earn a LIFE-LONG PASSIVE RESIDUAL INCOME. Start-up companies do not have good odds of providing that for you. Odds are you'll be starting all over again, from scratch, in a year or two.

Finally, you want a company that is ethical. Therefore you should never join a company that isn't a member of the Better Business Bureau. That just stands to reason doesn't it? But you'd be surprised to know many people never ask this question. And you'd be even more surprised to find how many companies are not members of the BBB!
